(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AECOM Technology Corporation, a leading provider of professional technical and management support services for public and private clients in more than 140 countries around the world, announced today that its global long-span and specialty bridges director, Dr. Robin Sham, has received the Gold Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the United Kingdom. The medal is ICE’s premier award for civil engineering excellence for an individual whose sustained contribution to civil engineering over many years is of significant magnitude and stature. In the nearly 200-year history of the ICE, only 20 gold medals have been presented.

Sham has worked on many of the world’s record-breaking, technically innovative bridge structures, such as China’s Taizhou Bridge, which was recently selected as one of five 2014 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) award finalists by the American Society of Civil Engineers; China’s Sutong Bridge, which received the 2010 OCEA award; Hong Kong’s Stonecutters Bridge, which was awarded the George S. Richardson Medal in the 2011 International Bridge Conference; and Hong Kong’s Tsing Lung Bridge, which is a third-generation suspension bridge with structural and aerodynamic superiority as well as a pioneering design by AECOM.
A fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the City and Guilds of London Institute and the Royal Society of Arts, Sham is an advocate for his profession. He also publishes and lectures widely on modern bridge engineering and was recently invited by the International Bridge Conference of the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania, as one of 20 thought leaders in bridge engineering and architecture around the world, to contribute an essay for the commemorative book titled "Reflections…of the greatest bridge engineers and architects of the 20th and 21st centuries,” to celebrate the conference’s 30th anniversary.
