Diabetes Awareness Campaign at the Naturalization and Residency Department

The Resources and Support Services Department, at the Assistant Undersecretary of Naturalization, Residency and Port Affairs’ office recently organized an awareness campaign on diabetes in cooperation with Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi. The campaign, which coincides with the World Diabetes Day, was held at Union Hall and attended by a large number of employees from the Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs Sector.

The campaign, held under the supervision of the Media and Public Relations Section, aims to increase awareness among all Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs Sector staff members of the need to lead a healthy lifestyle to prevent diabetes and blood pressure diseases, the most common diseases that impact the lives of both individuals and communities.

Brigadier Ghareeb Al Hosani, Director General of the Ports and Airports Security Department was one of the first to take part in the medical examinations. He stressed the police leadership’s keenness to participate in societal and cultural events, and its continuous commitment to promote the health and safety of community members.

The campaign included an educational lecture on the genetics of diabetes type II, by Dr. Habiba Alsafar, Assistant Professor; Department of Biomedical Engineering at Khalifa University. It also included free medical tests to measure blood sugar levels and blood pressure, along with advice and guidance from skilled experts on ways to prevent these diseases.  Publications, scientific and health education materials were distributed to the audience.

Dr. Habiba noted that diabetes represents a major challenge in the UAE, which ranks 11th globally for the disease, calling for concerted efforts to combat it. She also stressed the need to cope with the disease at an early stage, to reduce its adverse effects, as well as the need for early screening and timely diagnosis, particularly if a family member is affected with diabetes.

The lecture tackled various issues, notably the causes and risks of diabetes. It acquainted attendees with the common symptoms, means of prevention, and ways to live with the condition, urging them to lead a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, and undergo periodical blood tests.  

The lecture was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Ali bin Wadeema Al Ameri, Acting Director General of Resources and Support Services at the office of the Assistant Undersecretary; Lieutenant Colonel Taleb Abdul Karim Al Mahmoud, Chief of the Media and Public Relations Section; as well as a number of officers from the office of the Assistant Undersecretary of Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs.
