ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, October 30th 2013 [ME NewsWire]
In collaboration with the Emirates Motors Sports Federation and the "Saaed” Society to Reduce Traffic Accidents, the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate honored 16 motorists, winners of the Road Star Contest.
The winners were offered a cash prize and a certificate of merit for their respect and compliance with traffic rules on the various roads in Abu Dhabi.
First Lieutenant Sultan Al Ameri from the Public Relations Section at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate indicated that the winners were selected by a traffic committee from the directorate. Atik Hassan Mubarak, Secretary of the Emirates Motors Sports Federation, also participated in the ceremony held to honor and reward safe drivers.
Al Ameri explained that winning drivers were followed on internal and external roads to ascertain their compliance with the basic principles of safe driving, such as adhering to speed limits, wearing seatbelts and using indicators when they move from one lane to another.
He called upon motorists to reduce speed and adhere to legal speed limits on the various roads. He also urged them to wear seatbelts; avoid any distractions while driving such as answering the phone; keep a safe distance between vehicles; observe lane discipline; and check the validity of their vehicles’ tires. He noted that "safety on roads is everyone’s responsibility.”
Concluding, Al Ameri underscored the importance of being cautious; reducing speed around intersections; and avoiding accelerating when traffic lights turn from green to yellow before turning to red, to avoid colliding with vehicles coming from other directions.
