ME Newswire

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, October 20th 2013

The Ministry of Interior will exhibit at GITEX Technology Week 2013 showcasing modern smart technologies via several security initiatives and services at its pavilion in Sheikh Saeed Hall. The Ministry of Interior is keen to introduce its services to the public through diverse forms and channels. This is based on a comprehensive strategy to transform many services and make them available via smart-phones. This strategy is in line with the vision of the Federal Government to empower the concept of fast, high-quality services.

Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Central Operations at the Abu Dhabi Police, said: "Through its participation this year, the Ministry of Interior is keen to introduce and exhibit some of the e-government’s new applications. This is based on the smart government initiative, recently launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, in which His Highness gave directives to provide all government services via smart devices.”

"As many police departments will have a presence at GITEX 2013, the MoI’s participation this year is considered to be one of the largest. Members of the public will see over 40 stands showcasing the ministry’s initiatives and services,” he added.

Major General Al Raisi referred to a specialized committee at the Ministry of Interior, which he chaired. The committee works quickly to achieve a full transformation towards smart government before May 2015. This plan is within a timetable set by His Highness UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

Major General Al Raisi said: "The Ministry of Interior Award for Smart Applications, which aims to encourage universities and students to provide solutions for smart and mobile phone applications, helps to bring in more creative ideas and developmental projects, which further develops and improves the services provided to the public.”

Projects and Services

Major Mohammed Saleh Al Mansouri, Director of the GIS Security Center, said that the center will be displaying the electronic infrastructure program to exchange federal security-sensitive geospatial data. He pointed out that the program consists of three main projects: a project to equip the GIS data rooms and disaster recovery; a project to establish the infrastructure for Federal Geographic Information Systems, and a project for the acquisition and installation of software and databases for Geographic Information Security Systems.

He added: "Also on display, will be the federal security-sensitive geospatial data, which represents the technological interface for users of digital maps for internal users. It includes all types of security and police maps, such as operation maps and community police maps. The police resources management system using GIS will also be displayed; it constitutes a sophisticated geographical system allowing a speedy response and support for resources and field units in their mandated tasks. It also aims to develop and implement four applications to support the management and distribution of forces and police resources, as well as providing the possibility of analyzing the situation on site.

Major Mohammed Saleh Al Mansouri pointed out that there will also be a display for the mobile data unit application for field operations for assignments, receiving orders and directing field units to mobilize towards the site as quickly as possible. It is also one of the applications of the police resources management system that is used to locate the field units and display the geographic security analysis for notifications, crimes, and traffic accidents.

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police is taking part in the exhibition by displaying plenty of its smart initiatives and services. The visitors to the directorate’s stand can have a look at the digital traffic camera used to monitor traffic violators at Abu Dhabi intersections. This camera operates with state-of-the-art technology and high efficiency. The traffic cameras use infrared technology without flashing to nab motorists who run red lights, exceed speed limits, misuse traffic lanes, and park vehicles on pedestrian crossings in addition to capturing vehicles that illegally turn or make a U-turn to the left from the wrong lane.

First Lieutenant Eng. Marzouq Saeed Al Zaabi, Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s stand supervisor, said: "The monitoring system at intersections in Abu Dhabi is an integrated project to improve traffic safety. As part of the program, 150 light-controlled junctions will be fitted with surveillance cameras in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region within the next five years.”

He explained that the traffic monitoring system at intersections in the emirate is a modern traffic system allowing continuous assessment of the engineering of intersections and their impact on traffic safety and accidents. The system is linked to the notifications and text messaging system, as well as to the Portable Variable Message Signs (PVMS).

First Lieutenant Al Zaabi said: "The project represents one of the most important traffic safety improvement projects (engineering, awareness, control, assessment, response, and speed) on the roads and intersections in Abu Dhabi. It is an integrated project encompassing the necessary components to improve traffic safety.”

He added: "The traffic control cameras at intersections are high-quality thermal infrared cameras covering more than five lanes in each direction. They are multifunctional and include infrared license plate readers; they are used to determine the numbers and types of crossing vehicles, estimate the average speed, and determine the number and directions of pedestrians during green and red lights.”

Visitors to the MoI’s pavilion can also stop at the Weapons and Explosives Department at the Abu Dhabi Police to see the Telemax explosive ordnance robot, a state-of-the-art, small and multifunctional robot to remove explosives, which is run by experts in this field.

First Assistant Ali Abdullah Al Karbi, stand supervisor, said: "This vehicle is ideal for closed spaces such as planes, subways, cars, and cabinets. It has a high-maneuver performance and can operate in angular spaces with an angle up to 45 degrees. Telemax is the first robot in the world to have control systems.”
