MoI Launches Child Protection Award to the Best Film and Best Script at ADFF
Major General Al Nuaimi: To enhance social awareness about violence against children

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) created the "Child Protection Award” as part of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) awards categories. The award will create a vibrant film culture on child protection issues locally and internationally, in pursuance of the Ministry of Interior’s vision. Best Film and Best Screenplay awards will be presented to films that raise awareness of child protection and safety.

In a statement on the sidelines of his press conference, held on Tuesday, at the Emirates Palace Hotel, to mark the upcoming launch of the 7th Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF), Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Child Protection, said: "The Child Protection Award has been introduced as part of this year’s ADFF awards. It will recognize the best film and the best script that deal with the subject of child protection and safety, with the aim of calling attention to the situation of abused or neglected children;  and covers the 14 dimensions of child protection .”

He added: "The award serves as recognition to filmmakers’ contribution, and reflects the valuable role played by the film industry and filmmakers, who can efficiently communicate with different society segments. The film industry has definitely left its mark in the efforts geared towards enhancing social awareness and delivering awareness messages to all community members.”  The press conference was attended by a big crowd of journalists, organizers and fans.

For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center, said: "The award was established upon the directives of the police leadership with respect to launching awareness-raising initiatives and programs and create a vibrant film culture on child protection issues locally and internationally, in pursuance of the Ministry of Interior’s vision.” Al Shammari expressed his gratitude to the management and organizers of the festival, and to the Security Media Department, for their valuable contribution in introducing the award.

Furthermore, Ali Al Jabri, ADFF Director, praised the Ministry of Interior’s participation in the festival. He said: "The festival includes a panorama of incisive cutting edge films that raise awareness of environmental and/or social related issues through the ‘Our World’ competition, sponsored by Masdar. It also sheds light on all events taking place in the Arab World.”

He added: "This award is a pioneering idea carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center. It is a noble move, as it addresses a highly sensitive and delicate issue: violence, abuse and neglect against children. The film industry is an important tool to highlight this important cause, and to spread the message on the urgent need to support this project and create the first award to recognize films on child protection.” Moreover, Al Jabri indicated that a wide selection of films that raise awareness of these issues will take part in this year’s edition of ADFF. Several ideas to develop and promote the award in the coming years are being discussed.”

Al Jabri extended his thanks and gratitude to Noura Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer of the Media Zone Authority-Abu Dhabi (twofour54), who offered to adopt and support the idea. It is noteworthy that Mrs. Noura Al Kaabi managed in a short period of time, of promoting and facilitating this award, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center.

The Abu Dhabi Film Festival is delighted to introduce in its program this year a new award category: the Child Protection Award created in partnership with the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center.
