Control campaigns Intensified to promote safety

In line with the traffic safety strategy’s priority to make roads safer, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police intensified the monitoring and traffic control on trucks traveling the Abu Dhabi – Al Sila road. This also comes in line with the two campaigns (Summer Without Accidents) and (Keeping Truck Drivers Safe and Sound) launched by the Directorate, to reduce the various causes of traffic accidents, particularly during this time of the year when roads witness traffic density .
Major Suhail Sayah Al Mazrouei, Head of the Western Region Traffic section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, indicated that the traffic control campaigns cover (compliance with traffic laws, tires validity, observing speed limits, load capacity and maintaining safe distance). It also includes tightening control on vehicles in general and particularly on trucks; given the risks associated with trucks’ accidents on all road users. Al Mazrouei pointed out that according to statistics, traffic accidents involving trucks accounted for about 11% of the total number of traffic accidents in the Emirate last year (2012).
Al Mazrouei called on road users to observe the legal speed limits (140 kilometers per hour) for light vehicles or (80 kilometers per hour) set for trucks and heavy vehicles.
He stressed the need to adhere to traffic laws, speed limits, and load capacity; calling on truck drivers to avoid reckless overtaking; check the validity of the tires; avoid counterfeit tires with expired validity; and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
For his part, Captain Abdul Rahman Abdullah Al Ali, Public Relations Branch Manager at the Western Region Traffic section, underscored the need to ensure the safety and serviceability of the tires, not rely on their appearance, and replace worn-out or and damaged tires to maintain their safety and the safety of passengers. Concluding, he called on them to check tire pressure from time to time in keeping with the hot weather, pointing out that the use of defective or damaged tires is a traffic offence that entails one-week impounding of the vehicle plus a Dh200 fine.
