New lifeline for displaced Syrians as HH Sheikha Jawaher launches ‘Big Heart for Syrian refugee children’ campaign to give over 1.65 million
Over 805,000 Syrian children have fled the crisis into neighboring countries

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, June 19th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

With the global community marking World Refugee Day on June 20th, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and UNHCR Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children has made the Syrian refugee crisis her immediate focus by launching the ‘Big Heart for Syrian refugee children’ campaign.

According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, over 1.65 million Syrians have fled deplorable living conditions caused by the conflict in their homeland, leading to the separation of many children from their parents.

HH Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi appealed to the UAE and the Arab world to set an inspiring example for the international community: "It is tragic that many refugee children are marking their second consecutive World Refugee Day without proper shelter, food and education. Let us not leave them to face another year alone, and rather help them to overcome their situation and find a better life. During my visits to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, I have been deeply touched by the generosity of their Lebanese hosts and the refugees themselves, because they share the little they have with each other. We stand by their side and we will spare no effort in giving Syrian refugees the secure life that every human has a right to.”

This campaign follows previous humanitarian efforts in which HH Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi has helped to raise over AED100 million (approximately US$30 million), transforming the lives of Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian and Somali beneficiaries among others. Her Highness is now taking her efforts to the global stage to raise awareness, contributions and hope worldwide.

Imran Riza, UNHCR Regional Representative to the GCC, expressed the UNHCR's appreciation for Her Highness’ commitment to supporting Syrian refugees: "We hope people throughout the UAE and the region will join Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi in sending a message of solidarity to Syrian refugees. Women and children make up the majority of the Syrian refugee population, and ensuring that they receive basic humanitarian assistance is a moral imperative. We are very pleased that many refugees will benefit from Her Highness’ noble efforts, which will alleviate their suffering and maintain their dignity through educational and livelihood programmes."
