April 2, marked the World
International Autism Day launched by the United Nations in 1986. The
Light It Up Blue campaign is an Autism Speaks initiative to have iconic
landmarks lit in blue on that day around the world. Organized by the Child
Early Intervention Medical Center and supported by Jumeriah Group, the Burj Al
Arab was lit in Blue that evening and projected the Autism Speaks logo to
support the cause.
The Autism Awareness Gala Dinner
organized by the Child Early Intervention Medical Center, at the Jumeirah Beach
Hotel arena took place under the blue lit Burj Al Arab. Sponsored by the Al
Waleed Bin Talal Foundation-Global, the foundation has formed partnerships with
renowned academic and research centers around the world to promote interfaith
understanding and intercultural awareness and tolerance. Armjst, Anfasak
Dukhoon and Client Advertising, who dedicated a special song for Autism – I
have a dream together we can, was sung by Smitha Prabhakar. Representatives
from Dubai Healthcare city, DHA, diplomats and other prominent business members
from Dubai were present to show their support. The evening included speeches by
Dr. Marwan Abedin, the CEO of Dubai Healthcare city and Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bin
Kalban, CEO of the primary health care sector at DHA thanked Child Early
Intervention Medical Center for their efforts. Video presentations from
Professor Stephen Shore, of Adelphi University, who was diagnosed with severe
Autism as a child and has gone on to achieve two Masters in music and
special education to mark possible recovery. The Princess Alya Foundation had
successful experiences with children on the Autism spectrum disorder through
their Growing Together program. Their video on their initiative supporting
Autism and other special children was also shown. The musical performance by
the famous Arab violinist, Habib Alberto was dedicated to children and
families affected with Autism.
The Fifth Annual Walk for Autism
will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Supported by UAE Red Crescent and
organized by CEIMC in collaboration with DHCC, more than 10,000 people are
expected to take part in the family event in Dubai’s Zabeel Park to raise
awareness of the disorder and highlight the importance of integrating special
needs children into our community
